The [[Human]] population of [[Ghenna]] endured [[Old Night]] with a fairly advanced society, but became overcame with genetic diseases. By the time of the [[Great Crusade]] less than a thousand Ghennans remained, all kept alive in life-pods. Each Ghennan in turn commanded thousands upon thousands of artificial Simulacrum which resembled normal Humans, creating a society of billions of synthetic beings.{{Fn|1a}}

Though Ghenna initially peacefully accepted [[Imperial]] rule in the Great Crusade, shortly after they rebelled. When a [[World Eaters]] force arrived to conduct compliance, the World Eaters immediately massacred the Ghennan emissaries when they discovered their artificial nature. What followed was a hasty invasion, spurred on by the World Eaters fears that should they fail to conquer the planet in 31 hours [[Angron]] would again initiate decimation against his own [[Legion]]. The billions of Ghennan Simulacrum initially were able to overwhelm the World Eaters through sheer weight of numbers, and the Astartes were unable to conquer the planet within Angron's time limit.{{Fn|1b}} However thanks to [[Gahlan Surlak]] both localizing the source of the Ghennan command and reverse-engineering their technology to perfect the installation of the [[Butchers Nail's]] within the Legion, the World Eaters under Angron himself were able to launch a devastating counterattack.
