A Chapter Master is the foremost leader of a Chapter of Space Marines. He is assisted in his position of leadership by the Chief Librarian and Chaplain in most cases. A Chapter Master possesses centuries of battle experience and is invariably highly skilled in tactics, leadership and all kinds of combat.

The Chapter Master is responsible for maintaining the traditions of the Chapter. He is often the planetary governor of the Chapter's homeworld, giving him further responsibility.

The title "Chapter Master" is not consistent throughout the Adeptus Astartes and less standard Chapters use different titles to denote the Chapter's leader. The most notable titles are: "Supreme Grand Master" (Dark Angels), "Grand Master" (various Chapters), "Great Wolf" (Space Wolves), and "High Marshal" (Black Templars).

There are several famous Chapter Masters within the Imperium; a useful resource, for their experience and battle prowess can change the course of a battle within the howling battles of the 41st Millenium:
