Sergeant Antaro Chronus of the Ultramarines, wearing the traditional red helmet of Sergeants.

The Codex Astartes designates that every Space Marine squad is to be led by a Space Marine Sergeant, a veteran of hundreds of battles, truly forged in the fires of war, and will lead his squad with an icy calm through the most dangerous of scenarios and emerge victorious.

Overview

To become a Sergeant, a Space Marine has to prove himself capable of keeping his nerves through the toughest of warzones, as well as being a formidable fighter. He has to be willing to make difficult decisions based on his instincts, and so only a few Space Marines have the required level of ability to take on this role.

However, being a Sergeant will likely not come on its own to a Space Marine. Most Sergeants quickly go on to gain Terminator Honours, the Iron Halo, or a variety of extra awards based on their squad's performance. This can lead the most veteran Sergeants to acquiring a large range of different accomplishments and wargears, such as Veteran Sergeant Vandar (of the Ultramarines Chapter), youngest ever recipient of the Iron Halo.

Most Sergeants take to the field with different weapons from their squadmates, as a status symbol they often wield close combat weapons, specially Chainswords or Power Swords, probably as means to better direct the squad they lead.

Squad Sergeants

Space Marine Sergeants

Space Marine Sergeants lead the Marine squads of the battle- and reserve companies.

Scout Squad Sergeants

Scout Sergeants both teach and lead the Scouts. By giving their skill and experience to future battle-brothers they are arguably among the most influential members of a Chapter.5

Veteran Sergeants

Veteran Sergeant are Space Marine Sergeants that having received the Crux Terminatus lead the 1st company squads, and that sometimes are borrowed by other company squads who can benefit from their experience and their access to advanced wargear.

Terminator Sergeant

Terminator Sergeants are the best of the Terminator units and lead from the front with superior equipment to the already dominating Terminators within his squad. He will lead anything from 4-9 Terminators in a Terminator Squad or 3-9 Terminators in a Terminator Command Squad if he has proved himself to be good enough4.
