Sergeant
Sergeant is a military term used in denote a soldier who undertakes the command of a single squad of men. The rank of Sergeant is most commonly used in the Imperium, by forces such as the Imperial Guard and Space Marines. Rebel human forces and free systems presumably still use it, a link to a forgotten or regretful past. Other races make use of a similar system, but usually use a different name to represent their Sergeant.

Veteran Sergeant
A Veteran Sergeant is similar to a Sergeant, and is used primarily by the Imperial Guard and Space Marines, but who has been in battle several times before and has gained sufficient experience to be allowed access to the armoury, though they do not count as officers. No other race seems to use this type of rank, staying with the basic Sergeant. For a Space Marine to be inducted into the first (veteran) company, they usually serve time as Veteran Sergeant beforehand, though some are inducted straight due to extreme acts of valor.
