The Volcano Cannon is amongst the most powerful laser cannon used by ground forces . Only extremely large machines, namely Imperial Titans and super-heavy tanks, can wield it in battle. It is primarily meant to target huge objects and obliterate them with a single shot. Such targets usually include other war-machine or Titan-sized opponents.

The Volcano Cannon is the signiture weapon of the Imperial Guard Shadowsword - a super-heavy tank designed for Titan-hunting.3 Due to its comparatively slow rate of fire when mounted on the Shadowsword, the Cannon is used for dealing killing blows to Titans, Gargantuan Creatures and other such monstrous engines of war only after their void shields (or similar defences) have been deactivated by massed fire from smaller vehicles or weapons teams.

A Warlord Titan with two arm-mounted Volcano Cannon

The Volcano Cannon is amongst the most powerful laser cannon used by forces of the Imperium of Man. This long-ranged weapon is capable of slicing off the arm or leg of a Titan[1a] or killing an enemy war engine[2] with a single shot.

Known Patterns

Titans

A Reaver Battle Titan can mount a Volcano Cannon only on its two arm mounts,[3] while a Warlord Battle Titan can equip Volcano Cannons on each of its arm or carapace hard-points.[4] The massive Imperator Titan can carry up to six on its carapace hard-points.[5]

MkIV Phaeton pattern

A Shadowsword with Volcano Cannon

The Type 22-S, MkIV Volcano Cannon, Phaeton pattern is the Volcano cannon mounted on Imperial Guard Shadowswords.[1b] Due to the immense power requirements to fire the weapon, the Shadowsword must be stationary so that the main drive can be disconnected and the generator connected in its place, allowing power to transfer to the vehicle's capacitors. Firing the weapon just once will completely drain the capacitors, again requiring the vehicle to remain stationary so that they may be recharged.[1a]

Notes

In the original Adeptus Titanicus era material the Volcano Cannon was refered to as the Defence Laser[6]
