The Beheading was an attempted coup of the High Lords of Terra in 546.M32 by Drakan Vangorich, the Grand Master of Assassins[1]

Overview

For reasons still unknown, in 546.M32 Drakan would act against the High Lords of Terra. Deploying his elite assassins, the High Lords were slain to a man. A Space Marine strike force drawn from the Halo Brethren, Sable Swords, and Imperial Fists Chapters was scrambled to stop Vangorich. Storming the Assassinorum Temple on Terra, the force was assailed by a hundred Eversor Assassins. A sole Space Marine survived to reach Vangorich and slay the mad Grand Master with his Bolt Pistol. Afterwards, the Imperium descended into a period of anarchy.[1]

Aftermath

Agnathio, Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, united over fifty other Chapter Masters and arrived on Terra to contain the anarchy which followed the incident. Putting an end to the political squabblings of who should succeed the High Lords, the Astartes sorted out the issues in a closed session of the Senatorum Imperialis. When they emerged, the new twelve High Lords had been chosen.[2]
