The Codex: Ultramarines was the first rule book dedicated entirely to Space Marines, and, although its focus was on the Ultramarines chapter it was suitable for use with any codex Space Marine army. The format of the army in Codex: Ultramarines was later developed into the generic format found in the ensuing Codex: Space Marines, as opposed to the army formats found in either of its contemporaries Codex: Angels of Death and Codex: Space Wolves.
