Dawn of War: Soultorm is the third expansion in the series of RTS (Real Time Strategy) games in the Warhammer 40000 universe, and was launched in 2008. Whereas the campaign of Dark Crusade was conquering a single planet, Soulstorm's campaign is the conquest of several planets and moons, basically a single star system, Kaurava. While there were four planets and several moons to capture, the total number of sectors to actually take was not much greater than that of Dark Crusade, where a sector took up about the size of a country, in Soulstorm they're about the same size of continents.
Two more factions were introduced:
- the Sisters of Battle
- the Dark Eldar
AIRCRAFT
There was also the addition of 'flying' units. These units did not actually fly, but hovered a certain distance off the ground, giving the aircraft the ability to pass over impassable terrain. Most were ineffective against infantry, but were designed for aerial combat and light anti-vehicle uses, while others were designed for bombing. The flying craft were not attackable by melee, so players who used melee tactics found themselves almost unable to deal with a player who relied on them.
The aircraft added are;
- Space Marines: Land Speeder Tempest
- Imperial Guard: Marauder Bomber
- Orks: Fighta-Bomma
- Eldar: Nightwing
- Chaos: Hell Talon
- Tau Empire: Barracuda
- Dark Eldar: Raven
Note: The Necrons did not receive an air unit, instead they were enabled to use one of the C'tan gods, the Deceiver.
In a weak attempt to make the new factions look better than everything else, Iron Lore reduced the balancing by a great extent. Soulstorm is not part of the main franchise, meaning that Soulstorm is more of a professionally done modification than an actual expansion.
Reception
Many players are unhappy with the latest expansion. As the company that created it was Iron Lore, instead of Relic, the overall quality of the game was reduced. Voice-acting was badly done for the new units, said units were either horribly unbalanced, pointless, redundant, or useless, and AI was sketchy at best.
In an ironic note, the special ability known as the "Soulstorm", the one the game is named after, is an overall expensive, weak and useless one.
