Ragnar Blackmane was born a barbarian in the local tribes of Fenris, of the tribe of the Thunderfists. He was chosen to be a Space Marine of the Space Wolves chapter by the Wolf Priest Ranek, during the sacking of his village. Though dealt a fatal wound, he was saved by the medicine of the Astartes.
He was sent to one of the training camps on Fenris, and was eventually sent through the Gates of Morkai, in which he was subjected to psychic interrogation in the search for taint. While he almost failed due to his rage and hate of another aspirant, he passed and was allowed to drink from the Cup of Wulfen, and did not give in to the wolf spirit. At the end of his initiation rite he returned to the chapter fortress of The Fang bearing the pelt of a blackmaned Fenrisian wolf, a notoriously vicious breed. Ragnar soon became a Blood Claw, praised both for his actions slaying the traitor Madox on Fenris (though Madox returned to face him on three occasions) and assisting Inquisitor Sternberg in the reclemation of an Eldar talisman, pieces of which were scattered around the galaxy, including in an Ork invaded world, and a Space Hulk, but caused an uproar when he threw the Spear of Russ into the warp in a desperate attempt to stop the fallen Primarch of the Thousand Sons. While many, including Logan Grimnar, believed it to be the only way to save the chapter from annihilation, Ragnar was despised by many for the seeming loss of the relic to the enemy.
He was then made a Wolfblade, assigned to Terra to guard an allied Navis Nobilite group, foiling a plots by the Fallen and racists in the houses of the Navigators. Along with his fellow Wolfblades, he helped recover the spear from Madox on the Chaos mirror world of Charys with the help of the Thirteenth Company.
He later bacame a Wolf Lord without becoming a Grey Hunter, rather moving straight from Blood Claw to Wolf Guard.
Ragnar's own Wolf Guard consists of Brothers Egil (who went through basic training with Ragnar) and Gunnar, as well as the Rune Priest Njal Stormcaller.
