They are specialists in heavy weapons. The unit comes in between 4 and 9 [[Space Marines]] and 1 [[Sergeant]] and those not armed with a heavy weapon are armed with [[Bolters]]. The Sergeant may change his Bolter for a [[Bolt Pistol]] and [[Close Combat Weapon]].

Up to four of the Marines are armed with either a [[Heavy Bolter]], [[Missile Launcher]], [[Lascannon]], [[Multi-melta]] or [[Plasma Cannon]]. The Sergeant may also be upgraded to a [[Veteran Sergeant]].

They may also be loaded into a [[Rhino]] or if there are 6 or less in the squad, a [[Razorback]].

The weapons they toat are generally used for busting into tanks and heavily armoured opponents. They are versatile enough to provide heavy firepower on the assault and make a battery of defensive guns when defending.

Within some chapters, the devastators are known by different names, for example, in the [[Space Wolves]]  the devastator squads are refered to as [[Long Fangs]].

Some chapters are more inclined to use a larger number of devastator squads, such as the [[Dark Angels]]. These chapters combat docterines favour the usage of devistating ammouts of heavy weapons fire over a furious close combat assault.
