Racej Lucerne
Racej Lucerne was a Space Marine Sergeant of the Unnumbered Sons from the line of Rogal Dorn, originally serving in the 308th Expedition Torchbearer Fleet[1b] but eventually becoming a member of the Black Templars.[2]
Biography
Lucerne was once a Priest-in-training before being kidnapped by agents of Belisarius Cawl and transformed into a Primaris Space Marine.[1b] Alongside the Historian Fabian Guelphrain and 50 Battle-Brothers of Imperial Fists lineage, Lucerne's was part of an expedition to relieve the Black Templars Angevin Crusade. He was chosen for the mission in part because of his strong faith in the Emperor. Another mission secretly given to him by Roboute Guilliman himself is to slay Fabian should it become revealed he is a pawn of Chaos.[1b]
Upon rendezvousing with the Angevin Crusade, which consisted of a single vessel and 14 Space Marines. Upon meeting Castellan Beorhtnoth, it was revealed these Black Templars held a deep mistrust for the new Primaris Space Marines. Declaring trial by combat to reveal the will of the Emperor, Beorhtnoth challenged Lucerne to an honour duel. Lucerne was victorious, but refused to slay the Castellan as tradition dictated, and while Lucerne was allowed to join the Black Templars he was informed that the rest of his Unnumbered Sons could not, for they had not earned their place in the Chapter as he had.[1c]
Lucerne alongside the Black Templars later took part in the Battle of Srinagar, where he revealed to a Black Templars Chaplain that he knew the Angrevian Crusade had massacred their initial delivery of Primaris Space Marines as well as their accompanying Custodes. Lucerne was nearly killed by the Chaplain before a loyal Neophyte named Botho killed him instead. Later, Lucerne declared this Neophyte would join the forces of Indomitus Crusade Fleet Tertius.[1d]
By the time of the Plague Wars, Lucerne had become a Sword Brother of the Black Templars but was still accompanying Fabian. By this point Lucerne and Fabian had become close friends, and the Space Marine had saved the Historian's life at least 3 times.[2]
