The Sector Imperialis is a feature in most hive cities of the Imperium. [1a]
Overview
The Departmento Genusum classifies different hive sectors, including the Sectors Imperialis, which are the most populous and diverse. These sectors house billions of workers engaged in manufacturing goods, such as ammunition, chemicals, and food. While the conditions are harsh and polluted, they are self-sufficient. Various administrative functions, such as record-keeping and civil duties, are carried out in the Sectors Imperialis, with workers often toiling under difficult conditions.[1a]
Life in the Sectors Imperialis is grim, with poor infrastructure and constant strain to meet the demands of the Imperium, where workers face long hours, short breaks, and little understanding of their tasks. Buildings are often worn down, collapsing with workers inside, and while vital structures are rebuilt, others are left to decay and be scavenged. After major conflicts, some precincts are left in ruins, further exacerbating the grimness of life in these sectors.[1a]
Despite the dire conditions, these sectors are viewed as somewhat glorious compared to the more desolate and dangerous areas like the Sectors Periferus or Infernus.[1a]
Hive cities are frequent targets in warfare due to their vast resources and strategic value. When enemy forces invade, the Sectors Imperialis usually face the heaviest fighting. The labyrinthine nature of a hive offers defenders the advantage, as they know the routes, hidden access points, and key terrain features that can help them in combat. However, intense bombardment, artillery, and orbital strikes can quickly transform the hive into rubble.[1b]
Structures
The Sector Imperialis is home to several key structures, each serving a unique purpose:[1c]
- Administratum: The vast and bureaucratic heart of the Imperium, filled with countless government agencies. These buildings are marked by the Aquila symbol and are often targeted in warfare, though their importance can vary, making their destruction unpredictable.[1c]
- Basilicanums: These serve as meeting places for Administratum officials, as courts for civil law, and as broadcast points for propaganda. Statues at entrances issue official proclamations, and the structures are often involved in political intrigue.[1d]
- Manufactorums: Factories controlled by the Adeptus Administratum, often in collaboration with the Adeptus Mechanicus, which produce various items, from components to processed human corpses. They are often sealed with heavy blast doors for protection, and superstitions about the machine spirit are common in these areas.[1c]
- Sanctums: Offices of the Imperial Cult operated by the Adeptus Ministorum (Ecclesiarchy), these structures are adorned with religious iconography and are believed to provide protection through faith, often exhibiting supernatural qualities during battle.[1c]
Additionally, other buildings like shrines, garrisons, training facilities, and warehousing are found throughout the Sector Imperialis. Maglev lines and maglift stations facilitate vertical transportation, and gantries and statues dot the skyline. The hive also contains pipes, drainage systems, and ruins, particularly in areas that have suffered intense conflict. Some districts have shantytowns, populated by outcasts and mutants.[1d]
