Description
This secretive and ritualistic group was responsible for maintaining the Legion's wargear, preserving its gene-seed, and upholding its martial culture.[1a]
Additionally, they acted as custodians of the Legion's hidden history, superstitions, and secrets. The senior priests, such as the Priest of Iron, Caster of Runes, and Speaker of the Dead, held places of honour on the Einherjar, the Legion's council of war. This council, which included every Jarl and Thegn, advised Leman Russ and allowed every warrior of the Space Wolves the right to speak.[1a]
Types of Priests
Speakers of the Dead
They were the Chaplains' equivalent within the Space Wolves Legion.[2a]
The Speakers of the Dead are leaders of the Cult of Morkai, embodying the Fenrisian wolf-aspect of death. They served as enforcers of discipline, instillers of fear, and keepers of the Legion's culture and history. These blood-soaked priests performed strange rites, donned esoteric masks, and carried mysterious tokens. Before battle, they made ominous oaths, chanting memetics that could influence the minds of the Legion.[2a]
They are known in the 41st Millennium as Wolf Priests.
Casters of Runes
They were the Librarians' equivalent within the Space Wolves Legion.[2b]
The Casters of Runes harness their powers through mysterious psychic matrices and Fenrisian rituals. They claim, to outsiders, that their abilities stem not from the Warp, but from the very heart of their home world, Fenris.[2b]
They are known in the 41st Millennium as Rune Priests.
Priests of Iron
They were the Techmarines' equivalent within the Space Wolves Legion.[1b]
The Priests of Iron are the masters of the armouries, war machines and technological arcana of the Space Wolves Legion. Depending on their speciality, they fulfilled a similar function to the Forge Lord, Master of Signals or Consul Praevian.[1b]
They are known in the 41st Millennium as Iron Priests.
