Psychic Runes, also known as Eldar Runes[8a] or Seer Runes,[8a][9] are powerful implements made of psycho-receptive Wraithbone[1][5] draw from and connected to[8a] the Warp[6] which allow Asuryani Seers means by which to direct and contain[8a] their Psychic powers[1] without attracting the Daemonic forces of Chaos,[8b] as well as to safeguard them from the Perils of the Warp.[1] Were it not for the runes, it is doubtful that the Aeldari could use their psychic powers at all.[8a]

Overview

Runes are kept about a Seer's person, hidden in pockets and pouches[5] or in a case hung from the belt,[6] and function similarly to keys:[5] with each rune representing a different state of mind which locks[6] or unlocks the power of the bearer's mind – and their Psychic Powers.[5] The runes also safeguard the seer from the perils of the warp, and if too much power is drawn upon the runes they use will glow hot and risk the potential of being destroyed.[1] This also aids the seer in avoiding serious danger to themselves.[6] The more experienced a Seer becomes, the more runes they can use,[5] and it is only by attempting to utilise a rune which he has not fully mastered that a Seer imperils their life and spirit.[6]

In matters of divination, runes may be cast on the ground in small handfuls by Eldar Seers (especially Farseers) for soothsaying, with the meanings of the runes as well as their proximity and the pattern they create showing the diviner prophecy.[8a] Various uses of psychic powers may involve runes floating from their pouches to fly about the user in complex patterns, orbiting their head or body.[10] It is said that the spirits of ancient Seers flow between a Craftworld's Infinity Circuit and the runes of it's seers, and that it is the spirits of the dead themselves which guide the Seers.[6] Seer runes act as fuses, protecting the Eldar minds from the tremendous power of the warp.[9]

Warlocks use a specially honed subset of runes known as the Runes of Battle which bolster their warhosts and bring havoc to their enemies.[1]

Varieties of Runes

There are many different rune shapes, and the most ancient of seers can even create new runes[1] and teach them.[6] It is said that Eldrad Ulthran has fashioned over a dozen distinct runes over his long life that only he has mastered.[1]
