Catachan Barking Toad
Catachan Barking Toads are a clade of devastatingly poisonous creatures native to the Death World of Catachan. Barking toads are extremely rare, and because of their unusual toxicity nobody has yet been able to successfully study its habitat and behaviours.[1]
Catachan Barking Toads tend to live in or near shady, dank, dark, places and don't appreciate being disturbed, to an extreme degree. They are also unpredictable in movement, one moment hopping around, the next hiding underneath dark rocks.[2]
Great Barking Toad
The Great Barking Toad of Catachan (Catachanus Bufo Moribundus) is considered the most poisonous creature ever recorded.[1] When startled by a predator, it explodes[2] emitting a kilometre-wide[1] cloud of poison which kills every life form within, penetrating sealed suits, powered armour, and even respirators.[1] Every biological organism within the poison's zone is reduced to a formless and slimy mass, and no vegetation will again grow there.[1]
Lesser Barking Toad
The Lesser Catachan Barking Toad (Catachanus Moribundus Minor) is the smaller cousin to the Great Barking Toad and while it is equally poisonous and wary of predators its explosion only is about ten metres wide, nearly a hundred times smaller.[2] Lesser Catachan Barking Toads do not detonate themselves when approached by Kroot or by members of the Catachan Jungle Fighters regiments.[3]
The Lesser Catachan Barking Toad has been encountered upon a number of worlds, although it is unknown how they came to spread beyond Catachan. When discovered, they are carefully removed from these new worlds, as they are a most lethal pest.[3]
Trivia
- Games Workshop has opted to never create rules for Great Catachan Barking Toads in any of its games for so deadly is its poison that the first time a shot was fired or chainsword powered up the game would end.[2]
