Lifebane (Chaos Weapon)

Spoiler!
The following paragraphs contain spoilers for: Luther: First of the Fallen (Novel)

The Lifebane is a Chaos-tainted dagger, that the traitorous Dark Angel Luther received from Typhus the Traveler, in the aftermath of the Second Zaramund Campaign‎. The weapon is cold to the touch and has a rusted handle, with a blade that shimmers like an oil slick.[1]

History

The weapon was originally possessed by Typhus the Traveler, during the Horus Heresy and he carried it on Zaramund, when he sought aid for his fleet. The world had fallen to his old Dark Angels comrade Luther, but Typhus' fleet was being pursued by the vengeful Dark Angels Captain-Paladin Corswain. The Paladin would arrive on Zaramund soon, but Luther promised to help Typhus, avoid Corswain's wrath. The Traveler, however, gave the Lifebane to Luther and insisted he use it to kill the Paladin. Typhus claimed the weapon could anything, perhaps even a Primarch, and in Luther's hand it would make short work of Corswain. Doing so would not only solidify Luther's support of the forces of Chaos, but it would also grant him the favour of the Chaos Gods. Luther refused to do so, though, and he instead used manipulation and deceit, to help his comrade. The traitorous Dark Angel managed to both hide Typhus' fleet from Corswain and convinced the Captain-Paladin of his continued loyalty to the Imperium. When the Horus Heresy ended, a civil war would erupt on Caliban between the Dark Angels loyal to their Primarch Lion El'Jonson and Luther. The two leaders would clash during the battle, but Luther refused to use the Lifebane on El'Jonson as he realized he had been wrong to betray his Primarch. The civil war caused Caliban to explode shortly afterwards, and it is not known what became of the weapon.[1]
