Overview
At one point secessionist rebels staged an uprising on Sallan's World.[1]
Among the Imperial forces that responded to crush the rebellion were the Valhallan 8th Armoured Regiment, who were in their element fighting on the icy world. The regiment made planetfall and took the fight to the rebels in Sallan's World's sub-arctic tundra belt (the only habitable region of the planet). After securing a beachhead, the 8th launched a month-long enveloping offensive, seeking to isolate and cut off the rebel fortress and command centre at Sallan's Point.[1]
The offensive consisted of a pair of tank columns, spearheaded by Leman Russ Vanquishers and two of the regiment's four Baneblades. Although the rebels tried to dig in and counterattack, they could not halt the Valhallan advance, which withstood and overran every attempt to stop them. Eventually the columns met at Sallan's Point and the fortress was surrounded and besieged.[1]
Over the course of a month the Valhallan 8th's artillery destroyed Sallan's Point's outlying defences, allowing the regiment’s Medusa battery to advance and fire on the main curtain wall. The rebels attempted to break out and escape by utilising their own tanks to blast through the remains of the fortress. The Valhallans gave chase and, over a running battle that lasted four days, the rebels were chased out of the nearby pine forests into the frozen wastes and defeated.[1]
Aftermath
The final battle resulted in the loss of two of the regiment's Baneblades. Those leaders who were captured alive were executed on the orders of the Inquisition. All of the remaining prisoners were transported to penal worlds.[1]
