The Sparatoi Vindicta were Solar Auxilia Regiments that served the Alpha Legion during the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy.[1]

Overview

It is believed that the name "Sparatoi" might mean "sown men", in reference to the habits of the Alpha Legion to secretly seed operatives outside of its ranks.[2b] The label was in fact a broad classification for hosts used by the Alpha Legion that closely resembled those of the Solar Auxilia. Their exact origins and dispositions were unclear. Like their Legion masters, the Sparatoi Vindicta specialized in infiltration, assassination, and sabotage.[3]

They fought for the heretic Alpha Legion in the invasion of Paramar V.[2a]

Heraldry

Their livery was similar to one that the Alpha Legion occasionally used, which notably occurred during the Nurth Compliance. For reasons that are unknown, some units or individuals within the Sparatoi Vindicta wore a pale green stripe on their helmets.[1]

The regiments' vehicles were painted in a dazzle pattern, which was likely intended to make it harder to find and target their weak points. This was likely also the reason why the markings on the Vindicta's armoured units showed little or no consistency in how they were applied.[1]

Confusingly, Sparatoi Vindicta units sometimes used iconography of other Solar Auxilia formations.[3]

Trivia

  • The Sparatoi are probably named after the Spartoi, who according to the Greek myth sprouted from the ground when Cadmus planted the teeth of the dragon he had killed.
