Ork Warboss[1]
Part of a series on the:
Orkoid Species

The Warboss is the highest position in Ork Society, and the most prestegious of Nobz.[10a] He is always the biggest, strongest and most cunning Ork in any given grouping of such creatures, and gets the best armour, weapons, and equipment. In war, Warboss's will lead mobs of Orks to war while a select few will become successful enough to oversee massive interstellar rampages dubbed Waaagh!'s.[2b]

He is easily distinguishable from his brethren because of his bossy nature and tendency to be over nine feet (3 metres) tall. As a general rule of thumb, the more successful a Warboss is, the larger he is.[2b]

Role

In battle a Warboss often directly leads his tribe as a noble, and is a force to be reckoned with himself. Warboss's commonly keep a group of Nob bodyguards, Gretchin ammo haulers, and a pet Attack Squig around, making them even more formidable in combat.[5b] A Warboss maintains his position by power purely because of his size and the ability to beat any challengers to a pulp. Yet the more brawls and victories a Warboss wins, the bigger and stronger he gets, which will in turn increase his number of followers and prestige.[2b][2c]

While Warboss's may seem unintelligent, they all possess a bestial cunning that allows them to organise devastating Waaaghs!. That being said, many Warboss's often leave the more mundane tasks of war such as battlefield organisation or logistics to underlings and instead prefer to get up in the front of any good fight.[2a] Along with brutal violence and cunning, the ability to loudly shout is one of the most vital criteria to becoming a successful Warboss.[5a]

A Warboss leading a Waaagh!

On the rare occasion that a Warboss isn't leading a fight or cracking heads, they take great delight in showcasing their wealth and power. They will hold court in cavernous foul-smelling halls, feasting and drinking with captured war banners and other trophies from defeated enemies. Often his inner circle of favoured Nobz will be included in these grand spectacles, where all deemed worthy show off their spoils of war.[5a]

If a Warboss is killed, the largest Nob of the tribe will take the Warboss's place, usually only after brutally restoring order among the tribe and establishing himself as the new Warboss. This works effectively out of combat, as things have time to sort themselves out through duels and challenges by would-be successors, but sometimes Ork Nobs fall upon one another during a battle, effectively destroying any sort of cohesion that the original Warboss had among the tribes under his command. Many an Ork invasion has been repelled due to killing the Warboss combined with a swift counter-attack, but such an action should never be thought of as a perfected method of fighting greenskins.[5b]

Variations

Warlord

Particularly dominant and successful Warbosses are called "Warlords" or "Great Bosses". Tribe after tribe will flock to such a prominent leader, forming a massive Ork horde.[2c] The most powerful and successful Warboss's may instead refer to themselves by a unique and impressive title of their own devising, such as the "Arch-arsonist" of Charadon.[2d]

Warlords rise to such exalted heights by showing genius in battle and besting their rivals and challengers, but mostly thorough commanding obedience and respect by shouting very loudly. Great intellect is not a prerequisite to become a Warlord, and its lack is rarely a drawback as Warlords have an easy time finding able advisors to attend to their demanding tasks. Warlords hold court in great Orkish halls and sit upon garish thrones decked in the trophies of their victories – the finest of which is often considered to be a Space Marine Helmet, which they display upon War Banners as testaments to their prowess and leadership.[10a]

Other Titles

Ork Warboss[9]

Warboss's sometimes have a variation of titles depending on their place in Ork society.[2b]

  • Speed Freek bosses are known as Speedbosses[2b]
  • Mekboy bosses are known as Mekbosses[2b]
  • Flyboy bosses are known as Flybosses[2b]
  • Painboy bosses are known as Painbosses[5b]
  • Freebooter bosses are known as Kaptins.[7]
  • Feral Boarboy bosse, who ride atop Warboars are known as Boarbosses.[8]
  • Beast Snaggas Warbosses are known as Beastbosses and they are decked in the spoils of their greatest kills. Beastsbosses lead from the front lines and look for the biggest, meanest prey they can find to bring down with their klaws. Rippling with muscle, scar tissue, and bad attitudes, these hulking Warbosses either run or ride Squigosaurs into battle.[4]

Wargear

Warbosses wield a wide array of wargear, with little standardization existing. A Warboss will always wield a formidable array of weaponry, a necessity to reinforce his position to other Boyz. As the biggest and meanest Ork, he will always have the best spoils of war and access to the best equipment Mekboyz can provide. Often, Warbosses will ride transports such as Battlewagons or Warbikes to the frontlines.[2a]

Typical weaponry and wargear used by Warbosses include:[2b]
