The Broken are a Chaos Space Marine warband. Originally known as the Viridian Consuls, they were among the thirty Chapters corrupted during the Abyssal Crusade.[1]
Overview
The dual pledge of the Broken is beyond any reasonable doubt once their forces are considered: Juggernauts, Plaguebearers, Bloodletters, and Khorne Berzerkers[2j][2k], with a small contingent of dedicated champions of their own with tall-horned helms and power armour that had been reforged into plates of twisted, leering faces, adorned with skulls, streaming with flayed skins[2k], as well as Nurgle-mutated marines encountered near the crash site. History
Origins
The Viridian Consuls were a Space Marine Chapter formed from the Ultramarines during the Second Founding.[2a]
Abyssal Crusade
During the Abyssal Crusade, the Viridian Consuls were led by their Chapter Master Phrynon. After years of fighting, they were decimated and crash-landed on the Space Hulk Fury. Stricken with despair and anger at the Imperium that had abandoned them, Phrynon fell to Khorne and Nurgle. At first he would exile those who did not follow him to the upper levels where the battle-barge crashed, but later he sought to turn those who stayed faithful to their Emperor through terrible tortures.[2c] They were captured, crucified, and had Nurgle's spawn planted in their wounds, where they would undergo a cycle of death and rebirth for several millennia, many staying loyal despite this. Dark gods were pleased and elevated Phrynon, now renamed The Witness, to the status of Daemon Prince, and his followers, now a warband, were renamed The Broken.[2f]
In 812.M40, a Mechanicus fleet crash-landed on the hulk and became locked in a stalemate with The Broken for millennia, neither side being able to overwhelm the other. [2c]
In 812.M41, the warband was destroyed by the joined forces of Ultramarines and Mechanicus led by Marneus Calgar. He banished The Witness, who hasn't been sighted since.[2g] After the battle, the Ultramarines finally granted the Emperor's mercy to the still-loyal Viridian Consuls, ending several millennia of their terrible suffering.[2e]
Symbols
The icon of the Viridian Consuls is the Ultima icon, like the one worn by the Ultramarines, bisected by a sword and flanked by two wings of flame on a green background. The Broken have inverted the Ultima to form an Omega, a symbol signifying the end of all things and the finite nature of existence.[2b]
The motto of Viridian Consuls was "Fidelitas ad Mortuum" ("faithful unto death"). After being corrupted, this was changed to "Insanista in Tenebris" ("fury in the dark"). [2b]
