The battle initially saw heavy fighting between the [[Imperial Guard]] and [[Chaos]] forces over [[Garrovire]], a world of the [[Anaxian Line]].{{Fn|1a}}

Later, the [[Ultramarines]] [[6th Company (Ultramarines)|Sixth Company]] arrive to investigate strange psychic obfuscation within the ruins of a purged city on Garrovire. The Ultramarines were under the command of [[Space Marine Captain|Captain]] [[Maximus Epathus]], [[Librarian]] [[Maendaius]], and Lieutenant [[Vero]]s and [[Ferren Areios]].{{Fn|1b}} On Garrovire, they discovered a Chaos-tainted statue.{{Fn|1b}} Deciding to destroy the statue, the Ultramarines were attacked by [[Chaos Cultist]]s and a [[Possessed]] member of their squad, leaving Vero and Epathus dead, and Meandaius suspected of corruption. In the aftermath of the battle Aerios assumed de-facto command of the 6th Company.{{Fn|1c}}
