Void Dragon

Necrons Portal

The Void Dragon is one of the C'tan, the god-like beings worshipped by the Necrontyr and later the Necrons.

Before the Enslaver Plague

The earliest mentions of the Void Dragon relate it to technology in a way that would indicate it had an amazing affinity and ability to control it. In a transcript of a Vox-communication between one Inquisitor Horst and a Tech-priest Alagos, the Void Dragon is mentioned as the most powerful of all the Star Gods and that it had the ability to create almost invincible warriors. Also, it is mentioned that the warriors could channel lightning into their foes, perhaps related to a Necron Lord's lightning field, although the impression given in this text is that of a much more widespread usage, perhaps making the lightning field more standardised, much like the disruption field. The Necrons at the time, though much more powerful than the recently emerged ones, were stopped by a force of Eldar warriors known as the "Iron Knights", or simply "Knights", powered by the souls of departed Eldar.¹ This is before the rise of Slaanesh, so the souls of the Eldar would not be consumed, although where they went is unstated.

It appears now that the Eldar constructs were immune to the lightning bolts of the Necrons, indicating that perhaps these Necrons were not armed with the more familiar Gauss weaponry, perhaps a later modification made after these battles. It is possible that these Iron Knights are in some way related to the ancient Wraithguard, as they bear remarkable similarities to each other. They were also led by Wraith-Giants, possibly related to the Wraithlord, again with many similarities. It is said that many waves of Necrons were brought forth, but none could beat the Iron Knights, nigh-invincible as they were.¹

In the interim time gained by the forging of the Iron Knights, the Eldar god of the Forge, Vaul, created the Talismans of Vaul, or Blackstone Fortresses as they are known to the Imperium. These too were powered by the souls of Eldar seers, and were used by Vaul to attack the Void Dragon. Here the legend provided by the Eldar ends, and there is little indication as to the outcome, other than the opinion of the Inquisitor, which was that the attack had failed.¹

At the end of the great war, the Dragon created Warp Suppression Pylons and the Necrons spread a network of them around the galaxy in key locations. The purpose was so they could cut the Old Ones source of psychic power, by separating the warp from real space forever with an unbreakable barrir, however this project was interrupted and the mechanisms never finished.²

Eldar Mythology

The Void-Dragon is the name the Eldar give to this c'tan, he is portrayed as a figure of oblivion, wanton destruction and devastation. It was a master of the material realm and it's warriors were practically invincible. While eating stars it takes the form of a cloud of dark light. The myth ends with Vaul attacking the Void-Dragon.³

Dragon memory

According to Adept Semyon, one of the versions of the Dragon memories shows him fighting the Emperor near the city of Cyrene in Lybia of the 11th or 12th century.

The emperor, a lone warrior knight in golden armour and a scarlet-plumed helmet riding on a mighty charger of midnight black, wielding a tall lance of purest silver, from which flew a long red and white banner depicting a soaring eagle grasping a bolt of lightning, fought the Dragon, with the shape of a half crawling beast with talons like scythe blades, half loathsome bird, an immense scaled head and a tail twenty metres long, with a terrible winged body was covered with scales that were steel plates, rippling like liquid mercury, strong, bright and smooth like the emperor's armour and the light of devoured stars shone in its breast and malignant fire burned in its eyes.

After the emperor defeating the dragon by thrusting the sword at it's weak spot, beneath his left wing, he tied the banner around the helpless Dragon, and claimed that he could not destroy it, the emperor then brought it to mars and bound it beneath the Noctis Labyrinth, now known as the Dragon of Mars.

Guardians of the Dragon

Adept Semyon the Guardian of the Dragon, claims that with the dragon sealed in Mars, the emperor orchestrated the rise of the Mechanicus, using the dragon dream that would trigger the creation of the machine in the priests of Mars.

The Guardians of the Dragon job is keeping the bounds of the Dragon maintained, and they souls are chosen by the emperor for this task.

Adept Semyon passes the knowledge of all his antecedents and the emperor will and choices to Adept Dalya making her the new Guardian of the Dragon.
