By the late Great Crusade, the Ultramarines Legion was organised into 25 Chapters,[1a][1k] each organised into multiple Battalions and Companies, and made up of roughly 10,000 Space Marines.[1j][2]
Known chapters
By the time of the Calth Muster, the Ultramarines included:
- 1st Chapter: noted for their effective deployment of superheavy tanks during the Battle of Calth[1f]
- 2nd Chapter[1f]
- 3rd Chapter[1f]
- 4th Chapter ("the Aurorans"): known for their use of armoured formations;[1p][1h] formed the Aurora Chapter in the Second Founding[3]
- 5th Chapter[1p]
- 6th Chapter[1p]
- 7th Chapter: deployed in the far reaches of the Dominion of Storms aboard the Thunder of Hera by the Battle of Calth, and thus "unmarked"[1g][Note 1]
- 8th Chapter: only at a strength of 6,000 Marines before Calth;[1p] further reduced to less than 1,000 warriors during the Battle of Calth[1b]
- 9th Chapter: led by Chapter Master Klord Empion and assigned the battlebarge Phaunos; completely destroyed during the Battle of Calth[1d][1f][1l]
- 10th Chapter: fighting in the far Eastern Fringe by the Battle of Calth and thus "unmarked"[1g][Note 1]
- 11th Chapter[1c]
- 12th Chapter[1c]
- 13th Chapter[1m]
- 14th Chapter:[1a] only at a strength of 6,000 Marines before Calth[1p]
- 15th Chapter: only at a strength of 6,000 Marines before Calth;[1p] further reduced to less than 1,000 warriors during the Battle of Calth[1b]
- 16th Chapter[1n]
- 17th Chapter:[1i] known for their use of armoured formations[1p]
- 18th Chapter:[1i] known for their use of armoured formations[1p]
- 19th Chapter: Evocatii[Note 2] formation; not present at the Battle of Calth and thus "unmarked"[1g]
- 20th Chapter ("The Eagles"): specialized for void combat[1p]
- 21st Chapter ("The Hawks"): best known for its skilled pilots[1p]
- 22nd Chapter (the "Nemesis"): known for containing most of the Legion's Destroyer Marines, i.e. the Nemesis Destroyers[1e]. Contained at least two full companies of Destroyers, the 2nd and the 4th[4].
- 23rd Chapter: known for their use of armoured formations[1p]
- 24th Chapter ("The Exitium"): Evocatii[Note 2] formation; known for their use as a strategic reserve force, and large amount of support equipment; garrisoning and training in Ultramar by the Battle of Calth, thus "unmarked";[1g][Note 1] however, a small contingent was present at Calth[1o]
- 25th Chapter: Evocatii[Note 2] formation; garrisoning and training in Ultramar by the Battle of Calth, thus "unmarked"[1g][Note 1]
Notes
- Note 1: "unmarked": The Ultramarines who served in the Battle of Calth received, both physically as well as psychologically, the Mark of Calth. They were changed, and from then, differed from their brothers who had not been present. The latter were thus called the "unmarked", and were never again able to fully fit in with the rest of the Legion that had endured the horrors of Calth. Even Roboute Guilliman appeared uncomfortable in their presence, as they reminded him of what his legion had lost at Calth. In the Great Scouring, the "unmarked" chapters were increasingly deployed away from the remaining legion, and they were among the first to be split off and organised into independent Space Marine Chapters during the Second Founding.[1g]
- Note 2: "Evocatii": indicates that the Chapter had a large proportion of raw recruits, supported by a core of veterans. Used by Roboute Guilliman as training units for Neophytes.[1j]
- Note 3: Some Companies are not clearly tied to a Chapter by number. For example, the "547th Company" is noted as being on Calth and surviving, but the number of the company doesn't line up with an existing Chapter.[4]
- Note 4: In the 41st Millennium, the Black Consuls claim that their first Chapter Master Arrias Cordos was part of the "72nd Chapter" during the Horus Heresy. No Heresy-era reference to the 72nd Chapter exists, and its possible that they were originally the "72nd Company" before time corrupted the remembering.[5]
