The 14th Grand Company was an Iron Warriors Grand Company known to have been active during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy.[1][3a]

History

Great Crusade

At the time of the Great Crusade, the Grand Company was part of the 51st Expeditionary Fleet and took part in the Sak'trada Deeps Campaign, where the Iron Warriors Legion was battling the Hrud. Primarch Perturabo ordered the 14th Grand Company to prevent the Hrud migration from crossing the Vulpa Straits.[3a] Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain, after Perturabo's victory at the Gugann System, the Hrud came in mass to the world of Gholghis and began invading the planet. Held by a weakened 14th, Warsmith Barabas Dantioch ordered his men to confront the newly arrived xenos army, however, the temporal displacement powers of the Hrud were so powerful that began affecting the fortifications and the legionaries themselves, rapidly aging them to the point of death. With no hope of victory, Barabas ordered a withdrawal from the planet.[3b]

After the loss of the Vulpa Straits, Barabas confronted his Primarch, who was incensed after learning of Barabas's failure and considered the Warsmith weak for losing three worlds. Barabas held firm to his Primarch's accusations and warned Perturabo to abandon the campaign before the Hrud endangered more systems and declared the subsector perdita, stating there was no shame in defeat. After hearing Dantioch, Perturabo released him from his orders and assigned his forces for the compliance of Lesser Damantyne and with great anger told him he never wanted to see his face again. In response, Barabas grimly complied with his Primarch's orders.[3b]

Upon their reassignment, the 14th Grand Company arrived on Lesser Damantyne in order to bring it into compliance. In the first few years on Lesser Damantyne, the Iron Warriors started a war of extermination against the xenos native fauna, the megacephalopods, who tore down any structures the IV Legion attempted to erect. With the alien threat hunted to extinction, Dantioch began the construction of his greatest work: the Schadenhold. After completing their mission, a thirty-strong Iron Warriors garrison was left behind under the command of Barabas Dantioch.[1] Meanwhile, a new 14th Grand Company was formed under the command of Warsmith Idriss Krendl.[1][2a]

Horus Heresy

When the Horus Heresy erupted, Krendl's force declared to the traitors, whereas Dantioch's group proclaimed loyalty to the Imperium. The two factions of the 14th Grand Company subsequently battled each other during the murderous Great Siege of Lesser Damantyne. The conflict resulted in massive losses to the 14th Grand Company's traitor elements, whereas Dantioch's loyalist contingent eventually managed to escape the siege.[1][2a]

The Great Siege of Lesser Damantyne disgraced Krendl and his followers in the eyes of Perturabo, whereupon they were assigned to poorly-equipped hunter-slayer forces and effectively banished from the rest of the legion.[2a] Krendl spent the remaining civil war in an attempt to regain his Primarch's favor.[5] In contrast, Dantioch's group would win praise and play a major role for the loyalists in operations such as the Constantinium Incursion[2b] and Battle of Sotha.[4]
