Alecto is an Imperial Hive World.[1a]
Contents
Overview
It lies far from any of its major war-zones,[2] and is home to dozens of cities,[8] one of which is the sprawling Hive city Varangantua.[1a] While Alecto does have enclosed Hives on its southern pole, they have been dead for a long time.[4a]
Varangantua has a population of billions and is so large that it has different climatic zones.[2] Because of its size, Varangantua has been subdivided into numerous districts, which are watched over by the Varangantuan Enforcers[3a] and the Alectian Planetary Defence Corps PDF.[4b] The Hive World also deploys Astra Militarum Regiments known as the Alecto Urban.[1c]
The people of Alecto are largely ignorant about the state of the galaxy and most are convinced that Xenos are not real.[2] The hive city has several enclaves belonging to the Adeptus Mechanicus producing things such as high-grade servitors for off-world export. Most of these enclaves belong to the foremost Forge World in Alectos part of the Segmentum, Zhao-Arkkad.[3b] Their operations and all those who count themselves among the Cult of Mars on the hive world are governed by a group of nine magi, known as the Ennearchy.[3b][3h]
Since the opening of the Great Rift and the ensuing crusades, Alecto has been in economic recession. It is a planet in the wane.[3e]
Culture and religion
Alecto is home to a number of subcultures, often centered around certain areas or professions. One of these, the Khaadi, were a criminal gang which had gradually evolved into a completely separate ethnic group with very distinct customs.[5]
Like most Imperial worlds, Alecto is dominated by the Imperial Cult with figures such as Arch-Deacon Sakić.[4b] However, besides the omnipresent Ecclesiarchy, the planet has historically seen the rise and fall of a great number of smaller cults, many of which were eventually declared heretical. One of these, the "Weavers", practiced human sacrifice and believed that one could read and change the future through the threads of the factories' auto-looms.[6] Another, active by M42, was the secretive "Salvia" cult. Its members believe that the planet had already been inhabited by a Human population before the coming of the Imperium, and that their form of worship of the Emperor is much older and true than the sanctioned Imperial Cult.[1a] Salvia operates in secret for fear of being hunted by the Ministorum.[1c]
Slavery is illegal on Alecto and within the entire local subsector in the present day M42.[3d]
Flora and Fauna
- Sludge weed: Grows from the seabed below waste pipes and used to produce Fumario Lho-sticks.[7]
- Snake grass: Motile grass-like plant native to Alecto. Still grows wild in some places.[3c]
Planetary Data
The planet has a severe axial tilt. As seasons come and go, winter nights can be very long. Then in a few weeks, there will only be hours of sunlight. Then in other areas darkness will remain for months.[3e] Alecto's sun is often described as red, or sometimes orange, in the sky.[9]
The seas of Alecto are often described as being oily.[3f]
Notable Locations
Settlements
- Gladdown - Insignificant settlement on the coastal plains, further north and closer to the sea than Nearsteel. The weather is milder and no signs of industry are present.[3b]
- Steelmound[3]
- Menem-Ba's[3]
- Oceanwell - Settlement with starscrapers.[3b]
- Varangantua - Major hive city
Geography
- Saltstone sea - The sea that Varangantua is near. A pungent odour gave rise to a lasting song known to most inhabitants: You’ve never smelled before, before you’ve smelled the Saltstone sea, and you’ll never smell again, once you’ve imbibed its briny breeze.[3f]
- Varagan Mountains[3g]
