Amarok
Amarok is a Chaos Daemon.[1]
Biography
Leman Russ
During the Horus Heresy, Armarok is seen as a guest visiting the warp entity known as the Erlking. The Erlking and his warriors, alongside Armarok, appeared as hulking bipedal shadow wolves who spoke in juvjk, the ancient hearth language of Fenris.[2]
In preparation for his attack on Horus, Leman Russ' journeyed into the Underverse seeking knowledge on how to defeat the once-Luna Wolves primarch, Horus Lupercal. Upon Russ's entrance into the Underverse, he initially arrived in a featureless snowy plane under a night sky. The stars of the night sky shifted if focused on for too long. The snow that covered the barren expanse varied in depth, from knee-deep to chest-height for the primarch.[2]
Russ spied a large black quadrupedal wolf with gleaming yellow eyes on the horizon, at a barely visible distance. Russ pursued the wolf, barely keeping pace, blundering through snowbanks, never gaining or losing distance. After many hours, its revealed the destination was the hall of the Erlking, the lord of wights and of the alvar, the god of the nettagangr. Amarok would shift to his bipedal half-wolf form as he entered his lord's hall, Muspjall, the hall of those who die deaths that serve no one. The half-cooked corpses of cowards and those slain by age are served in feasts at their tables. Russ would enter the hall not long after Amarok arrived, having stalked the wolf all the way there.[2]
Horus
In the aftermath of the Battle of Trisolian, the daemon appeared to Maloghurst during his journey into the Warp to rescue the soul of Horus. It appeared in the guise of Iacton Qruze and offered Maloghurst the location of Horus in exchange for his soul. However, Maloghurst instead bound the daemon to him with warp-lore, forcing it to lead him to the fragment of Horus's soul.[1]
Trivia
An Amarok, or Amaroq, is a gigantic wolf in Inuit religion, said to stalk and devour any person foolish enough to hunt alone at night. Unlike wolves who hunt in packs, amaroks hunt alone.
