History

A planet of dark forests and grassy plains, humanity has attempted to colonise Amethal multiple times. However, each time ended with failure as the colonists started going mad, tearing themselves and their neighbours apart in a rampage of bloodshed.[1a]

In 999.M41 the expedition of Technoarcheologist Dominus Ivasnophon started excavations on this planet to reveal its secrets. A short period after the excavations had begun, during the first phase of the Diamor Campaign, the planet was attacked by traitor warbands including the Crimson Slaughter and Titans of the Legio Excruciatus. Adeptus Mechanicus forces based on the planet (mainly Skitarii) and their allies — House Raven, Cult Mechanicus and Legio Metalica — suffered great losses.[1a]

Following these losses, the Blood Angels descended on the planet, ready to defend the system. Initially the Crimson Slaughter were dispersed but suddenly another Chaos armada entered the Diamor system and the forces of Kharn's Butcherhorde made planetfall on Amethal; as they rampaged they were able to push back the Blood Angels and their allies.[1b] Only the arrival of the Sanguinor saved the Imperial forces, though only for short time before the arrival of Black Legion forces lead by Chaos Sorcerer Xorphas who begun a mysterious ritual. It appeared that Magos Dominus Ivasnophon was in search of a strange Chaotic structure here, called the Daemon cage trying to subside its energies and protect it grips of Chaos. But the forces of Lord Xorphas, the Hand of Xorphas, cut a clean path for him, and with the Banshee Stone Lord Xorphas shattered the wards of the Daemon cage. In spite of a strong combined offensive by imperial forces pushing the Black Legion into retreat, cracks in the Daemonic cage had begun to propagate so much that it would only be a matter of time until the Daemons within broke free.[1c]
