Angra Mainyu was a Word Bearers commander and a favoured lieutenant of Kor Phaeron during the Horus Heresy. He later ascended to a Daemon Prince, but fell from grace and was transformed into a Chaos Spawn.[1]

History

The Horus Heresy

Angra Mainyu led one of the Word Bearers strike-forces against the Ultramarines, who were regrouping and rearming on the planet Calth. He favoured a rapid assault force and often led from the front. He was supported by a large contingent of Assault Marines, whom were commanded by Mettare (one of Angra's three lieutenants). While the Assault Marines advanced upon enemy forces, the Tactical Marines (led by Draas) and the Devastators (led by Anglachel), would lay down suppressing fire. Angra's sorcerers also called upon the daemons of the Warp to fight against the Ultramarines from the rear of his army. Although Angra was gravely wounded many times during the battle, he was miraculously healed by the powers of Chaos, who had grown to favour him for his dutiful worship of their ways.[1]

Even after Horus was defeated and the Word Bearers Legion had fled to the Eye of Terror due to the Ultramarines reinforcements en route from Ultramar, Angra wanted to continue his war against the Imperium. His lieutenant Draas tried to warn him against this, but was instead banished by Angra for "being a coward and a weakling." Angra was by that stage maddened by his perceived failures to crush the Ultramarines, and began to slip further and further into insanity.[1]

The 13th Black Crusade

Shortly before the 13th Black Crusade broke out, Angra was granted the gift of daemonic ascension by the Chaos Gods and became a Daemon Prince. However, it was also during the 13th Black Crusade that he became utterly insane and began attacking Imperial forces foolhardily. He soon fell from grace and was transformed into a Chaos Spawn for his failings.[1]

It was by this stage that Draas, his banished lieutenant, returned and attempted to usurp Angra's authority. Much to his surprise, however, Angra was no longer in charge, and Draas took control of his host as a Dark Apostle.[1]
