Archipelaga is a Feral Ocean World, the landmass of which is broken up into innumerable islands of varying size.[1a]
History
The planet was a human colony, likely reclaimed by the Imperium during the Great Crusade, and subsequently lost during the Horus Heresy. The planet all but disappeared from Imperial records after the Heresy, but later evidence proved that the inhabitants had turned to worship Chaos and raised several temples to Nurgle.[1e][1f]
The Imperium re-discovered the world in the wake of the Damocles Gulf Crusade, and set about reclaiming it.[1a] The campaign to do so was prolonged, but not especially difficult, since the native humans had no high technology (crossbows and gunpowder representing the "state of the art").[1b] The capital city of the world had had a an Imperial starport built, and had "all the comforts of civilisation".[1c]
However, this changed when a squad of 109th[1e] Vostroyan Imperial Guardsmen stumbled onto one of the Nurglite temples and were possessed by Chaos.[1f] Known as Ghost Warriors, they went on a destructive rampage throughout the islands, killing both rebels and Imperial loyalists alike.[1d] Eventually, a party led by Commissar Ciaphas Cain tracked the rogues back to their temple and annihilated both by calling in an air strike.[1e] Thereafter, the Guard forces had to proceed with greater caution, on the lookout for possible corruption of other units, and making sure to destroy any remaining Chaos shrines.[1g]
