The Assault on Baal was an Ork invasion of Baal, site of the Blood Angels' fortress-monastery.[1]

Overview

In 798.M41, three enormous Space Hulks materialised into realspace within the Baal System, carrying the Orks of Waaagh! Big Skorcha. Chapter Master Dante responded quickly to the xenos threat; he ordered two companies each to garrison Baal's two moons while the Chapter's remaining companies led boarding assaults on the hulks with the aim of destroying them.[1]

The Blood Angels managed to destroy two of the hulks, but the third made it to Baal. Warlord Big Skorcha knew that the bulk of the Chapter was either in orbit or deployed on Baal's moons and instead unleashed its hordes on Baal itself, seeking to ransack the Blood Angels' fortress-monastery.[1]

Dante, however, had not left the Arx Angelicum undefended: all 41 of the Blood Angels' Dreadnoughts lay assembled under the command of Furioso Astramael. In the ensuing Battle of Iron, Astramael and the Dreadnoughts defended the ancient structure from the Waaagh!; although Astramael was merely tasked with holding the line until Blood Angels reinforcements arrived, the Dreadnoughts were so successful that by the time they were relieved, most of the Orks had been killed.[1]
