Overview
The Avenging Sons are based on the world Traekonnis Major.[4] They are one of the 10 Shield Chapters of Ultramar[7], and for this role have been granted the world of Callimachus by Roboute Guilliman.[5]
In 970.M41, the Chapter's Third Company went renegade and forsook the Imperium.[3]
During the Noctis Aeterna, the Avenging Sons were destroyed along with their homeworld of Traekonnis Major. They were subsequently refounded as the last Chapter created during the Ultima Founding. On orders of Roboute Guilliman, they were given the world of Callimachus within Ultramar and named one of the 10 Shield Chapters of Ultramar.[11]
Notable Campaigns
- ???.M41 - The Avenging Sons Second Company took extremely heavy casualties during the Antillis IV campaign. Outnumbered by the forces of Chaos, led by a warband of the World Eaters, accompanied by the apothecary of the World Eater's first company, Fabrikus, the detachment was ground down and eventually surrounded. Their defences broken, they fought to the end, detonating their position just at the moment of being completely overrun. The only known survivor was a single member of an attached Scout Squad.[1]
- 970.M41 - The Avenging Sons Third Company under Captain Gessart turned renegade after taking heavy casualties against a numberless enemy whilst fighting in the civil war on Helmabad. Deciding that being a renegade band was better than staying and dying for little worth, they led a revolt, killing their Chaplain and those battle brothers who would not follow them. The Third then negotiated with the traitors for safe passage to their Thunderhawk in return for leaving the planetary governor undefended. After fleeing the planet, which was struck by a Warp Storm forewarned by their Librarian, the Third Company painted over their Chapter badges and other Imperial symbols and set course for the Eye of Terror.[3][8]
- 992.M41 - Perun Cross Incident. Four Companies were sent to attack the Night Reapers after they were declared as excommunicate traitoris in 989.M41. The Avenging Sons contingent was soon forced to retreat due to the Night Reapers' use of 'warp-flame weapons' that bypassed their void shields, along with having one Strike Cruiser be boarded and captured by the rogue Chapter.[9]
- 998.M41 - First Taros Intervention.[2a][Note 1] A strike force of Avenging Sons fought in the war on Taros. Captain Armaros led the Taros Intervention Force in order to kill Planetary Governor Aulis, but they were surprised by the PDF forces and Tau warriors and failed.[2b]
- 999.M41 - Noctis Aeterna. The Avenging Sons homeworld of Traekonnis Major is destroyed and all of their Battle-Brothers are believed lost. The Chapter was subsequently recreated during the Ultima Founding on orders of Roboute Guilliman.[11]
- ???.M42 - The Ultramarian Reclamation[11]
Heraldry
The Avenging Sons wear navy blue power armour. A white diagonal stripe with a roman numeral in the centre denotes a Marine's company, and pauldron edges are also in company colour.[6]
Their symbol is a white cross.[6]

Trivia
Notes
- Note 1: Although page 19 of Imperial Armour Volume Three - The Taros Campaign does not explicitly state that the First Taros Intervention happened in 998.M41, the Taros Campaign itself was in 998.M41 and as the First Taros Intervention was part of this conflict, presumably it happened in the same year.

- In White Dwarf February 2019 about the kill-team weekender event, a black and white chapter with the same name is created by Ewan Osborne. This Chapter was a new Primaris Chapter and mentioned kill-team has been designated as Strike Squad Vigilus, the war zone to which they've been sent. The chapter icon is a skull with two axes crossed and a sword[10]
