The Black Engine is a spiky iron machine that runs on rail tracks throughout Samech, and it's older than the Age of Shadow. The tracks on which the black engine dwells are in the physical world but turn things incorporeal, including other vehicles, which allows them to ignore friction and any environmental hazards.[1a]

It's 10 metres long and has a face carved in it with a perpetual open maw, filled with razor sharp metal that looks like teeth and leering tongues, it's body bulges in a segmented arch with each metal plate possessing a spindle of more blades that slice and spin at anything close to its body. Groaning chains link a baroque ebony carriage to the Engine.[1]

Although it's not a servitor and neither possessed, it's machine spirit is spiteful and violent, and it runs on the promise that it will shred flesh at the end of each run.[1b]
