The Black Guard are a Raven Guard Successor Chapter that was created during the Second Founding.[7]

Background
During the Horus Heresy, the Primarch Corvus Corax reorganised his Legion's badly depleted Shadow Wardens into the Black Guard and named Gherith Arendi as their commander.[7]
The Chapter believes in the timely application of overwhelming firepower to defeat their foes and are masters of the careful ambush. During battles they deploy massed batteries of Thunderfire Cannons and Vindicators to annihilate their enemies in an instant; as overkill or half measures are not concepts which the Black Guard understand. As a result of this, they are known to leave vast cratered ruins in the wake of their many victories.[9]
Notable Actions
- 295.M41: The 3rd Company engaged the Tyranids from a splinter fleet of Hive Fleet Kraken in the Battle of Doom Gorge. The swarms were confronted with Thunderfire Cannons, commanded by Master of the Forge Germanicus. Three successive waves were defeated. With the Tyranid attack broken, the batteries provided cover for the Chapter's counterattack, ultimately destroying the Tyranid forces. Black Guard casualties were minimal.[5]
- 999.M41: The 13th Black Crusade — The Black Guard aided in the defense of Cadia.[8]
- ???.M42: The Chromyd Front — At Dyroch's Reach, Strike Force Krenzig of the Black Guard and Strike Force Vorgha of the White Scars conducted a guerrilla war among the hab-block-sized termyte mounds and steep-sided ravines of the Dereen Canyon. There, they frustrated the advance of multiple Death Guard vectoriums and allowed Hive Bakhenthri to withstand and attack launched by hordes of Nurgle-worshipping cultists.[10]
Heraldry
The power armour worn by the Black Guard is primarily white, with black pauldrons, arms and helmet, and red aquila. They show company affiliation by the colour of the right kneepad.[11]
