Brutus was a mighty, bull-headed Beastman minotaur.[1a] He wields a large axe[1b] and leads a small herd in service to Fabius Bile. Like generations of his kin, Brutus has spent most of his life within the hull of Bile's voidship, Vesalius.[1a]
History
For generations the abhuman crew of Fabius Bile's voidship proliferated naturally, as the beastmen would select for the strongest to survive with no effort on his part needed. Only minor genetic intervention was given to increase the strength and hardiness of his stock. Occasionally Fabius would step in to tweak genes and cull the weak, and a few among the horde had been specially made for this battle.[1c] These had stimm injector aparatus attached to their backs and were already swollen with muscle to begin with.[1d]
The mutants that crew his voidship are seen by Bile as little more than subhuman cannon fodder. Brutus is one of the few warrior-beasts that Fabius viewed as having any worth. Bile would actually deign to acknowledge and speak with the thick-tongued brute. Wholly subservient to his maker, Brutus led Bile's beast tribe. The creature had a surprising degree of awareness, cleverness, and competence for a beastman.[1c] This bovine-headed slab of muscle towered over his goat-headed kin and, as with all beastmen, might makes right.[1d]
Brutus was truly a minotaur in form, as true to the ancient legends of the Minoan hybrid as any Beastman could be.[1d] The spitting image of the mighty Monster of Knossos from ancient tales, bull-headed, furious, and indefatigable.[1c]
Brutus duelled Alpha Primus during Fabius Bile's raid on the Zar-Quaesitor. Primus was first forced to slay the minotaur's entourage of stimmed-up, muscle-enhanced humans and beastmen. The minotaur had a Blackstone amulet which disrupted Primus's psychic powers and a refractor field that deflected projectiles, forcing Primus to battle in melee, chainsword against power axe. The two genetically enhanced creations were evenly matched in strength, but eventually Primus would slay the beastmen and supposed New Men.[1d]
Brutus died with some solace knowing he had served his master and had sufficiently tested his strength against a worthy foe. Alpha Primus would saw off the minotaur's head and throw it as Bile's feet when they finally met. Fabius hardly gave a reaction to this.[1d]
Equipment
As as beastman, Brutus is armoured in a few crude metal plates, creating a rudimentary armour for himself, a wide baldric, primitive iron armour plates, belt and loincloth. Brutus was a useful and loyal tool that Bile favoured. One of the few beastmen he took note of, he was gifted some minor boons, such as a refractor field. Brutus wielded a huge double-headed power-axe in one hand and a custom ripper gun in the other.[1c] Although, he uses an Ogryn-sized gun, the beastman wields it with far better accuracy.[1d]
Trivia
- Some details of Brutus are references to the ancient Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, due to Brutus being one. These references include mentions of the Minoan civilisation and the city of Knossus, as well as the decapitation of the slain minotaur itself.
