Alpha Primus is the prototype of the Primaris Space Marines and the personal enforcer of Archmagos Dominus Belisarius Cawl.
Overview
Primus' true nature is unclear, but he seems to have a chimeric Gene-Seed made up of samples from multiple Legions.[3] Primus was originally created by Cawl in an attempt to recreate the process the Emperor used to create the Primarchs. The process failed, however, and instead Alpha Primus was used as the prototype for the Primaris. Primus was much more heavily modified than most Space Marines, more so than even the Primaris, being described as having been rewritten on a genetic level rather than merely implanted. The process made him a Psyker of unparalleled power amongst the Astartes, as well as physically more powerful than even the Primaris, yet still not to the extent of a Primarch.[2b] Primus' psyker power grade and type according to the Imperial Assignment is unknown or hidden.[5a] Fabius Bile guesses that the gene-seed of Magnus the Red was used in his creation.[3b]
The flaws in the process used to create him also left him in constant physical pain across the entirety of his body.[2b] Notably, Primus does not consider himself loyal to the Emperor anymore but rather a servant of Cawl above all else, and considers himself the personal property of Cawl.[1][2b] Primus is the only one of his kind, as Cawl has since lost the technology needed to create warriors of his class.[2b]
Cawl sincerely views Primus as his son whom he nurtured. Cawl had also used his own genetic information in Primus' creation.[3b] Primus resents Cawl, to a degree, for how he was poorly made and is wracked with constant pain.[3a] This includes the metaphysical pain from his connection to the warp and the burdens of dark secrets this knowledge reveals.[4b] There is a clear but intangible link between Primus and Cawl, one that can never truly be severed. Cawl cares about Primus, who is as important to Cawl as his old companion Friedisch was millennia ago.[3a]
Biography
"It hurts me, but I am used to pain. Everything hurts, all of the time."[2c]
During the reveal of the Primaris Space Marines on the Zar-Quaesitor, Alpha Primus summoned Captain Vitrian Messinius to him using his psychic abilities. He warned Messinius not to trust everything Cawl says, but did also say that Cawl has no desire to rule, and wishes for the salvation of mankind.[4]
Sometime after the creation of the Great Rift Primus was charged by Cawl with retrieving the body of an Ordo Xenos Inquisitor from a Necron prison. Upon discovering the body, Primus noted that it was being fed upon by a creature resembling an Enslaver.[1] Primus later accompanied Cawl during his expedition to Sotha to study the Pharos.[2b]
During the Indomitus Crusade, the forces of Fabius Bile invaded the Zar-Quaesitor. Cawl initially suspected that Bile sought the Sangprimus Portum, but in truth was instead seeking Alpha Primus. Primus was cornered by Bile and his abominations and overpowered. Bile was able to remove Primus' Progenoid Glands and as Cawl confronted him, revealed he had equipped the Primaris prototype with a mutagenic agent that would activate if Fabius were to die. This forced Cawl to allow Bile to escape with the stolen Progenoid glands, but Primus survived the attack.[3b] He later accompanied Cawl in his research to stabilize the Attilan Gap and took part in the Battle of Ulvheim.[5c]
Appearance
Alpha Primus is like no other Space Marine. He is huge, even by the standards of a Primaris Space Marine, standing eight feet tall[1], and strange-looking in other ways. There is a coppery sheen to his pale, horribly scarred skin. His eyes are black with just a hint of white around huge pupils. His habitually shaved head and chin are dark with fast growing stubble. His lips are plump and purplish, always downturned, giving him a sullen expression that suited his soul. Some Astartes note an air of great potency around him.[2d][1]
Primus often dons grey standard Mk X Power Armour, similar to an Intercessor.[1]
