Necormunda gang cults by John Blanche[2b]

Clan gangs, (also known as clan warriors) are the most common type of gang known to exist on the Hive World of Necromunda. They protect the clan territory and other members of the clan as the later go about their work.[2a]

Overview

On Necromunda every clan, no matter how large or small, has gang fighters[2a] who protect the clan’s territory and attempt to expand its borders into areas controlled by its rivals.[3a] In the hives every manufacturing process, industry, service and transaction is the concern of one clan or another, and the competition for limited resources – even such basics as good food, air and water – mean that every clan has armed forces to secure its survival.[2a]

Running with a gang comes as part of the life cycle for many ordinary Necromundans. Juves in their early teens are initiated into the gang by various rites of passage. From then until their mid-twenties they are expected to play their part in defending the clan's territory and upholding the honour of the clan. After several years with the gang, a warrior gains the respect and status of his family and other clan members and gains the right to found his own family and take part in the clan business.[2a] The success of a gang establishes the right of its members to become leaders of their own families and take part in the administration of their clan’s business, with the most successful gang leaders of their generation becoming clan leaders and the heads of important families.[3a]

Lower class Clan gangers by Martin McKenna[1]

Every clan, and groups of related families within each clan, have their own territory or concessions, often carved out and defended by their own gangs of young clan warriors. Each group of closely related families living in distinct close-knit territory will have a gang to protect them and their workshops, factories and associated living areas.[2a] Other clans, gangs, and strangers will be challenged if they violate the gang's territory without permission or payment of tribute.[2a] A single clan, living in just one spire of one hive, may have hundreds of associated gangs, and there are thousands of clans on Necromunda.[3a]

Youths are initiated into the gangs by various initiation rites to prove themselves wordy, like showing acts of reckless bravery (such as scragging an enemy by cutting off an ear or finger as trophy), or enduring ritual scarification without flinching.[2a]

Clan warriors can often be quite well armed through trading with other gangs. Most of them receive ritual scars or tattoos of some kind.[2a]

Clan gangs with a good reputation are known to be hired by other clans, noble households or Lord Helmawr’s officials for various tasks.[2a]
