Core Cogitator
The Core Cogitator is a type of cogitator that functions as the central 'brain' of an Imperial starship.[1b]
Description
The Core Cogitator controls and operates a variety of system, including the environmental and life-sustaining systems, the shipboard gravity, the output of the plasma drives, the targeting arrays and even the lights. It routs the energy to the void shield generators when under attack and is responsible for the targeting systems, calculating the necessary angles at which the macrocannons need to be fired to hit an enemy target moving at relative speed. Most importantly, the Core Cogitator is responsible for Gellar Field operations. Without the Core Cogitator, these shields could never be raised manually, meaning the ship is lost during a warp journey or prevented from even undertaking one at all.[1b] Even manoeuvring is impossible without the cogitator.[1d]
Many of the operations of the Core Cogitator are overseen by hardwired servitors and the tech-priests stationed onboard.[1b] If a Core Cogitator is damaged, it can only be repaired by a Mechanicus Forge, but can be replaced by one salvaged from another starship.[1d]
The Core Cogitator of a Grand Cruiser has the appearance of a massive crystalline cube[1a] as big as a Rhino,[1c] inscribed with a number of arcane runes. It pulses with a faint purple light and has hundreds of sockets functioning as connection points.[1a]
