The Crawler is an underground life-world from the extensive polar deserts of the planet Luther McIntyre IX.[1a]

Overview
This burrowing creature lives in dry soft sand and other similar loose soil. Though it is native to Luther McIntyre IX, they were subsequently transported to other Desert Worlds in attempts to domesticate them. Though they mainly eat micto-plankton from the sub-soil they could attack bigger animals including humans. All of the domestication programs failed because Crawlers ran wild and since then developed on several hundred worlds.[1a]
Biology
Crawlers resemble cuttlefish or squid, whose rear shell has evolved to a single driving screw. The creatures use them to propel themselves along the surface of loose soil or even underground. To feed, crawlers grasp their victims with their tentacles and draw them into their beak-like, gaping maw. Crawlers can detect vibration from the living creature's movement on the surface and will also home in on excessive or unusual vibrations.[1a]
Main Enemies
The main enemies of Crawlers are Ambulls that followed on them to the other worlds of galaxy.[1b]
