The Dark Blade[1] is a massive obsidian Daemon Weapon, that has a powerful Daemon within it.[2a]

Description

It is a perfect jet black and contains no other marks to blemish its surface, though the Dark Blade's hilt, pommel and grip are often adorned.[1][3] The weapon inflicts cauterized and bloodless wounds and consumes not only the light,[2b] but also the souls of those slain by the Daemon Weapon. This is done by the Daemon within the Dark Blade,[2a] who uses this power to force the bearer on to greater acts of savagery in order to sate its appetite.[1][3] However it has a never ending frenzied thirst for souls, which greatly increases every time the Daemon devours one. The weapon's wielder is in danger when this occurs, as after every death, the Daemon will attempt to turn the Dark Blade against them. The weapon will then begin to thrum and shake, and the only way to stop the Daemon is for the wielder to focus their will upon the Dark Blade. If their will is greater than that of the Daemon's, then the Dark Blade will stop moving until it claims another soul and the process starts over again. However, if the Daemon's will is greater then a golden glow will begin to spread along the weapon's centerline. This signals the end of the wielder's life, as Dark Blade will then emit a burst of negative light which pulls on them until the wielder is impaled upon the Daemon Weapon.[2b]

History

The Dark Blade was wielded by a Chaos Undivided Daemon Prince,[2c] during the 13th Black Crusade,[2] who was among Abaddon the Despoiler's forces that invaded the Cadia's Kasr Partox. During the attack on the Kasr, the Prince ambushed Chapter Ancient Octavian's Ultramarines Honour Guard squad, as they sought to deliver a warning to Lord Castellan Ursarkar E. Creed. Despite their skills and bravery, the Daemon Prince was able to kill many of the squadron's members with the Dark Blade, before the Ultramarines were finally able to banish the Prince back to the Warp. It is not known what became of the Daemon Weapon afterwards.[2c]

Trivia

The Dark Blade is referred to as the Darkblade, in an article on an older version of Games Workshop's website.[2c]
