Overview
Repurposed industrial devices, demolition charges are heavy packs or containers of shaped explosives that are placed or thrown at a target and can have a variety of activation methods. Some are set to explode on impact, while the majority have some kind of delay, such as a standard det cord or a electronic timer, so that the user can get a safe distance away from the explosion.[1] Military grade demolition charges are also referred to as DX-41a detonation packs, det packs, or simply charges.[7] They are effective simple powerful explosives effective can can adhere to a variety of surfaces.[7][8] Most demolition charges are armed with a timer and thrown or placed onto a set location a safe distance away for demolition actions.[7][8]
Demolition charges are simple explosives used to open doors, breach bulkheads, and destroy infrastructure. Each charge typically has 1 kg of explosives. Multiple charges can be rigged together to create a great detonation.[5][6] "Demo charges" are also effective used as anti-personnel weapons, although the power of the typical explosive charge can damage or destroy tanks and fortifications. A standard-type charge looks similar to a flattened cylinder and weighs around two kilos and detonates upon impact after being activated and thrown. Its lethality sphere is supposed to be around twenty metres. Demolition charges are not always standardised, however, and often are actually improvised in the field. As a result, there are numerous variances in weight, appearance and detonation method. A common improvised demolition charge is simply a group of tube-charges taped together and set off remotely by wire or timed det-tape.[2]
Guardsmen who volunteer to carry a demolition charge are authorised to request better food and ration allowances.[2]
Demolition charges can also be mounted on vehicles. These are heavy explosives, used to destroy buildings. These demolition charges are detonated by remote control, after being deposited at their intended targets.[4]
