History
In late M41 the planet was attacked by a raiding Ork warband. The planet's defences were stronger than usual, however, as an Astra Militarum troop transport was in orbit of Desolatia IV waiting for a nearby Warp Storm to abate. As a result, the Orks were contained and wiped out in short order.[1]
Shortly after the last Orks had been eliminated, Desolatia IV was invaded again, this time by a splinter of Hive Fleet Behemoth. The tyranids' invasion was successfully repelled by the Astra Militarum forces.[1]
Amongst the units employed in the defence of Desolatia IV were multiple Valhallan regiments, including the 6th Armoured and 12th Field Artillery. The second conflict is notable for being the first military action that Ciaphas Cain took part in, with the newly-graduated Commissar distinguishing himself during an attack by the tyranids on the Valhallans' base of operations by discovering an attempt by the xenos to outflank the Imperial army and luring them into a crossfire. Cain was lauded by his regiment for both his actions on the battlefield and for his foresight in coordinating a civilian evacuation (although Cain would admit in his private memoirs that he was, in fact, trying to flee the battle and merely got lucky).[1]

Notes
- Note 1: The short story Fight or Flight states that the tyranid splinter fleet that attacked Desolatia IV is a fragment of Hive Fleet Behemoth after Behemoth was broken by the Ultramarines at Macragge with Cain remarking that that "the Segmentum was full of them".[1] This would presumably place the Desolatia system in the same Segmentum as Macragge, which is located in the Ultima Segmentum.[2]
