Empyrion IX is a world of the Imperium.[1]

History

Empyrion IX was once inhabited, with an Imperial settlement (including a great temple to the Emperor of Mankind) dating back to the era of the Great Crusade. However, both the settlement and the planet were abandoned after it was discovered that the mineral deposits on the planet were much poorer than predicted, which left it with little strategic value.[1]

Many years later, an army of Khornate cultists led by an individual known as the Manskinner was stranded on Empyrion IX after their ship crash landed. When a replacement ship arrived in orbit, the cultists planned to use the abandoned city's spaceport to board the vessel, which they wanted to use to reach and attack Macharia. However, a detachment of Black Templars led by Commander Athellenas had deployed to stop them. The Space Marines met the cultists in a series of battles across the ruined city but, rather than stand and face all 6,000 heretics, Athellenas kept disengaging and falling back. This drove the cultists' rage past the point of madness; by the time they had reached the spaceport, the cultists were so desperate for battle that they had turned on each other in an orgy of violence. In the aftermath, there were only 38 cultists left, who were easily finished off by the Templars.[1]
