You are to be Apothecaries, the first tenders of flesh. For the next nine months, you will work under my command. These men and women will tutor you. You shall learn from those who made you. Ezekiel Sedayne was born into the wastelands of Terra in the Age of Strife. As a young man he hungered for knowledge and wished to help people. Ezekiel had heard of the Master of the Lines, a man who ensured the purity of blood and genes among the peoples of a region that included the Alapi mountains. He was a man of the old sciences that came to the people during recurring festivals, purifying the blood of young couples. This Master of the Lines would become known as the Emperor. A young Sedayne went on a perilous journey into the mountains almost dying to raiders and the elements to find the Master. Ezekiel had sought the knowledge of the old sciences to help people and upon meeting the Master, he was in awe and felt compelled to serve the man.[1a]

Sedayne would eventually grow into an exceptional scientist in the Emperor's service. In time, Sedayne would become one of the Emperor's key scientists involved in the Astartes project, rising to Lord Geneticist and Director of the Emperor's Biotechnical Division. One of his greatest achievements was perfecting the Black Carapace originally developed by Amar Astarte.[1b]

Sedayne had a favoured location to take breaks from his duties in the Emperor's service. It was a location in the Emperor's Himalazian facilities that had a view overlooking the remnants of the abandoned hive city of Putoo in the burnt out kingdom of Miamar.[1d] It is here where the Emperor would greet Sedayne as Belisarius Cawl, who was reliving past memories due to the powers of the Pharos. In this conversation the Emperor told Cawl that he must continue His work and that one day Cawl would betray the Emperor, but nonetheless persevere the Imperium. Sedayne's own memory of this conversation would become vague.[1a]

Prior to the beginning of the Great Crusade, the Emperor's greatest servants, His scientists, would educate and train the first Space Marine Chief Apothecaries. At this point, Sedayne was an old man, strong but frail, striding about with a cane like a showman. Sedayne would take part in the Space Marine's tutelage alongside his associates as leader of the 22nd science group. The first Space Marine apothecaries were trained in the science of Space Marine surgery and physiology. Among these first Apothecaries being taught was Fabius Bile, whom Sedayne met only a few times while they educated the Third Legion, but these encounters had a lasting effect on the young and arrogant Fabius.[2a]

Not long after the Horus Heresy concluded, Ezekiel's body was beginning to fail despite extensive Rejuvenat treatments. Seeking to continue the Emperor's work, Sedayne sought to achieve immortality by obtaining the soul-merging and cloning technology of Belisarius Cawl. Ezekiel had Cawl forcibly escorted to Terra by his servant and caretaker, Altrix Herminia. She would be ordered by Sedayne to shoot Cawl's friend Friedisch after Cawl declined his request to link minds and essentially take over Cawl's body. Sedayne promised he would heal Friedisch with his rejuvenat treatments, but only if Cawl combined his mind with his.[1b] Sedayne was confident that his mind would prevail. Cawl relented, but the unexpected occurred when Cawl's personality emerged dominant.[1a] Sedayne's personality remains deeply buried inside Cawl's gestalt mind.[1c]

Appearance

Ezekiel Sedayne was a man who stood as seven feet tall and had lustrous black hair. Not too long after the Horus Heresy concluded, he was an aged man and essentially a withered husk on borrowed time. His once tall frame was bent in on itself, hands knotted with arthritis, silky white hair as thin spider's silk, and had slack skin draped over brittle bones.[1e] Some of these physical effects were briefly assuaged via the diminishing effects of his rejuve treatments.[1b]
