The Farsight Enclaves, known as the Forbidden Zone to the T'au Empire,[7] is an independent T'au entity existing on the Eastern Fringe of the Imperium. Established and ruled by Commander Farsight, it has broken away from the T'au Empire[2a] and refuses any presence of Ethereals within its borders.[5]

The Enclaves include Tau from all castes save Ethereals as well as Kroot, Humans, and other T'au-affiliated species. Despite the break with the Ethereals, the Enclaves still venerate the ideals of the Greater Good.[9a]

History

In the aftermath of the Imperium's abortive Damocles Crusade in 742.M41 a T'au Fire Caste Commander, Shas'o Viorla Shovah Kais Montyr (perhaps better known to Imperials as Commander Farsight), led an expeditionary force to reclaim worlds lost to the Imperium. Battling Ork forces under Grog Ironteef, Farsight chased the Greenskins to Arthas Moloch and encountered a terrifying new foe there that rattled him to the core. In the aftermath of the incident on Arthas Moloch, Farsight refused to return to the T'au Empire despite being ordered to do so.[2a]

Instead, he consolidated the worlds he had already captured and established a series of fortified outposts in the Forbidden Zone. Shortly after setting the foundations of the Farsight Enclaves, O'Shovah himself went into a self-imposed exile to wander the wastes of Vior'los.[6]

In 997.M41, the Farsight Enclaves were assaulted by either a splinter fleet of Hive Fleet Kraken[1a] or Hive Fleet Gorgon.[9a] Commander Arra'kon was the military leader of the Enclaves by this time.[9e] Faced with this new Tyranid threat, Farsight himself subsequently returned to lead eighty XV8 Battlesuit teams to drive the invaders back.[1a] The Enclaves next fought alongside the T'au Empire against the Imperium during the Second Agrellan Campaign.[8a]

Recently, the Farsight Enclaves had found itself besieged by a large Ork Waaagh! led by the infamous Warboss Nazdreg.[4] Farsight dealt with Nazdreg on Dregrokk, but the Enclaves' armies were soon drawn into the Arks of Omen Campaign.[7]

Enclave Information

It should be noted that the Enclaves have diverged from the Empire's culture of preserving the lives of its members by embracing Farsight's belief that martyrdom is the highest expression of service to the Greater Good with the planet Lub'grahl's poles covered in memorial white stones for each life lost under the commander.[2b][2c] Further cultural divergence from the Empire comes in the form of occupations within the Enclave being accessible to anyone regardless of caste, a notable example is O’vesa who serves on The Eight.[2b][2c]

Despite still following the Empire's Caste System, Farsight's philosophy emphasizes one of individual self-reliance for each planet. He has phrased this as "Let them stand by themselves, not merely follow, blindly obedient".[9f] As such, each world of the Enclaves stands ready to make its own decisions via a locally elected council.[2c] This is in stark contrast to the absolute authority that Ethereals wield over Tau Empire Septs.[9f] While the Fire Caste manages overall command of the Enclaves via The Eight and other major commanders, the leadership is described as being collective.[9e]

The colours are the reversed version of the Vior'la Sept ones, the sept where O'Shovah grew up.[5]

Notable Individuals

Military

The military of the Farsight Enclaves is largely a smaller mirror of that of the greater Tau Empire. Its main forces are Fire Caste warriors with Air Caste naval elements.[9d] They utilize overall the same vehicles and weapons systems as those of the Tau Empire, though there have been unique technological developments such as the Warscaper Drone and Fusion Blade.[8b] Sophisticated Fire Warrior military academies and Earth Caste armaments factories have been established on Vior'los to supply the Enclaves military.[9a][9d]

Besides these forces, the Enclaves also operates volunteers from auxiliary races such as Kroot and Humans.[9c]
