Furia is an Ocean World in the Screaming Vortex, inhabited by castaways descended from survivors of crashed void ships and various sea monsters.[1a]

Overview

Furia is covered entirely by an unbroken ocean of dark water. The depths of this global ocean are unknown, and it is claimed in popular legends to be bottomless. According to one rumour, a sunken vessel's saviour-beacon continued to report its steady descent into the abyss long after the vessel should have emerged from the far side of the planet. The ocean is crossed by powerful currents and sudden riptides, although its surface typically appears calm and unbroken. Overhead, the skies are usually covered by a solid, featureless sheet of clouds.[1a]

Wrecked vessels and flotsam periodically emerge from the ocean's waters, although their provenance is unknown. Some legends connect this to singularities or Warp storms that periodically swallow ships, which are believed to transport the wrecks to the core of Furia. These serve as the planet's main source of both material and new inhabitants in the form of the surviving elements of their crews. Xenos survivors are sometimes arrive as well, such as Orks or Kroot, and prey on the locals for a time before being killed off.[1a]

Flora and fauna

Furia is inhabited by a variety of marine predators. Known fauna include saber sharks longer than battle tanks and schools of dagger fish capable of gliding above the water and consuming the crew of a small vessel in a single pass. Some areas of the ocean are covered in kilometre-long patches of paralytic medusa kelp, which serves as home for numerous small creatures that feed on larger animals immobilized by the plant.[1a]

The largest native creatures of Furia are the Leviathans, immense creatures covered in long, tooth-studded tentacles. Leviathans are the apex predators of the world ocean and are believed by locals to be half-Daemon or otherwise touched by the Dark Gods. Offworlders sometimes head to Furia to hunt Leviathans for the teeth lining their tentacles, which can be worked into sharp blades for chain weapons. Leviathans wander the oceans without set territories, preying on floating towns when they find them; only the most heavily armoured and armed can fight off such an attack. Occasionally Leviathans battle each other to the death, after which the victor leaves without consuming the body. The carcass left behind is quickly swarmed by both flesh-eating fauna and scavenging humans.[1c] Some rumours claim that Leviathans can travel through the Warp, preying on ships and dragging them back to Furia as wrecks.[1a]

Society

Furia's native society is known as the Castaways. These are a human population descended from survivors of wrecked void ships that fell or were drawn to Furia, and afterwards managed to eke out a living on floating wreckage. Castaway groups live on floating scrap-towns that drift on the currents, and survive by harvesting drifting material and fishing; due to the rarity of useful material, conflict over valuable scrap is frequent. Due to the lack of precipitation or fresh water on the planet, Castaways obtain most of their water from the blood of their catches. Life among the Castaway is low and brutal, marked by constant struggle for resources and fear of death; most individuals have little sense of loyalty except to their own survival and secondary to their immediate family groups.[1a] A persistent myth among the Castaways tells of a leader who will rise one day to either reform the planet into a paradise or lead them to a new home, although the details of this figure and his goals tend to be ill-defined. Offworlders sometimes take advantage of this to impress Castaways as labourers while searching for salvage, hunting Leviathans, or performing other tasks on the planet.[1b]

Most scrap-towns consist of a high outer wall made from thick armoured plating, intended to protect the residents from the dangerous creatures of the global ocean. The more influential settlements further defend themselves using scavenged ranged weapons, although these are frequently in poor condition. Inside the walls are residential areas, workshops, and markets, connected by a network of catwalks, gantries, and open lagoons.[1a]

The technology of Castaway groups is limited. Most are restricted to crude melee weapons formed from scrap metal, with rusty chainswords or autoguns being reserved for war-leaders. Transportation is done by sailing vessels formed from more intact starship materials, such as the hulls of cutters or landers being modified with sails and masts made from grav-chutes or solar sails rigged on repurposed sensor struts. Personal watercraft made from repurposed bikes or jetbikes are sometimes used by leaders of Castaway communities.[1a]
