Gramarye is an Imperial Industrial and Fortress World, which served as a Fiefdom of the Dark Angels Legion during Great Crusade and Horus Heresy.
Overview
It was once the seat of power for the First Legion's Council of Masters, which ruled the Legion after the death of Grandmaster Urian Vendraig.[1a] This changed after the Primarch Lion El'Jonson gained control of the Legion and it was reborn as the Dark Angels. Afterwards the old, grand Chantry[1a] was demolished, as the new seat of the Legion's power would be aboard the Invincible Reason. In its place, El'Jonson ordered that a more modest fortress be built, to secure the industrial sprawl of Gramarye.[1a]
Afterwards, Gramayre would serve as one of the two large outposts held by the Legion which saw the largest concentration of the Legion’s infrastructure. Its fortress hall’s would play host to the Hexagrammaton’s Council of Masters. With Gramayre’s vast industrial facilities producing many of the Legion's more esoteric weapons which had long been concealed from the scrutiny of the Mechanicum.[1b] The world also held sealed vaults containing large stocks of the Legion’s proscribed weaponry, including such types as life annihilating Gene-Phages, planet destroying Magna-Torpedos and the dreaded nanite scourge of the Silica-virae.[1d]
The standard pattern of operations within the Legion saw it used as a base for resupply for a force that was primarily based within the mobile halls of the fleet. Only on the rarest of occasions did any of the Chapters of the Dark Angels return to their halls for any lengthy period of rest, with garrison duty left to the rawest recruits and those masters and seneschals with Deathwing lifeguard cadres that stood warden over it’s domain. The world was considered heavily fortified and defended.[1b]
The Dark Angels were known to draw recruits from Gramayre, though only a few found themselves within the main force of the Legion as of the late Great Crusade. With most having been reassigned to Chantry Houses within the imperium proper, or the oft-overlooked fortifications of Gramayre itself.[1c]
During the Horus Heresy, while never attacked by traitor forces, Gramayre was kept isolated from the greater war, by both the actions of Word Bearers Esoterists and the strange powers they wielded, and the disturbing silence from certain echelons of the Legion’s leadership.[1b]
