The Grey Men are Humanoid failed Aeldari genetic experiments, who dwell in the Underhive of Necromunda's Hive Primus.[1]

History

They were created several hundred years ago, in an attempt to breed the ultimate stealth warrior. To achieve these results, the genetic experiment that created the Grey Men stimulated their physical and psychic growth. This led the Grey Men to develop a vast array of psychic powers, such as being able to plant seeds of doubt into minds, cause someone to move in a direction they did not intend to, blur eyesight and drain strength. The experiment also achieved its goal of granting the Grey Men the psychic ability to absorb the light from the air around them, which was called Light-shifting. It is their most potent ability and in normal lighting, the ability causes the Grey Men to appear faint and insubstantial, like a hologram. However when Light-shifting is used in total darkness, the ability is strengthened and the Grey Men become completely invisible.[1]

However the experiment also disastrously caused the Grey Men to develop a psychological trait of an almost total lack of aggression. While they were formidable fighters, who defended themselves with a strength and ferocity that was all but unstoppable, the Grey Men would not take the fight to the Aeldari's foes. Because of this, the Grey Men were declared a failure and the experiment that created them on a Laboratory Craft was discontinued. The surviving Grey Men were then abandoned on the first world the Laboratory Craft came upon, which happened to be the Imperial Hive World Necromunda. After being discarded of, they made their way to Hive Primus' Underhive and since then, the Grey Men's numbers have dwindled to be no more than a few dozen.[1]

They live alone in ruins and rarely venture far from the areas the Grey Men have claimed as their territory. When someone enters their homes, though, the Grey Men prefer to use their vast psychic powers to drive away the intruders as peacefully as possible. However the Grey Men will ferociously fight to defend themselves if need be and will use their Light-shifting ability to its full potential. Once engaged in a fight, the Grey Men will only retreat if their lives are in danger. As few have survived an encounter with the Xenos, though, the Grey Men are little more than a rumour to the Necromundans that dwell in Hive Primus' Underhive. But what little information has been gathered from the survivors, state that the Grey Men do not take kindly to visitors and live in some of the Underhive's most darkest and most inaccessible areas. It is also unlikely that Necromundans will learn more about them, as the Grey Men's description has left those who have heard of the Xenos, with no desire to seek them out.[1]
