Harjus is a vast Gas Giant classified as an Agri-World, located in the Harjian System of the Macharian Sector. Its economy is based on harvesting the immense shoals of airborne lifeforms that swim through its clouds.[1]
Harjus’ people live on two great moons that orbit Harjus:
- Ansa – Home to the Grand Docks, where enormous hauls from Harjus are processed and loaded onto trade vessels.
- Taikos – A world of fishing families, small farms, and the majority of the fisherfolk population.
Geography and Ecology
Harjus is a silvery-grey world composed of endless banks of atmosphere, populated by colossal cloud-dwelling megafauna. Among the most sought-after are immense cloud-rays, prized for their flesh and organs, though fishing crews also encounter numerous other species, some as large as ships.[1]
The skies of Harjus are also host to predators, most fearsome among them the mistwyrms. These vast serpentine beasts can swallow entire cloud-trawlers whole, forcing fishing crews to remain constantly vigilant.[1]
The Grand Docks of Ansa are famed for their acrid stench of ichor and processing chemicals, a smell said to linger in any material for years. Traders across the sector identify Harjus’ goods instantly by their distinctive tang.[1]
History
During the Noctis Aeterna, the Grand Docks were struck by raiders of the Ruinous Powers. Hundreds were slaughtered, fleets were pillaged, and Taikos suffered repeated assaults. Thousands were taken prisoner.[1]
For three years, House Karvonen led a resistance campaign against the raiders. Their most famous act was the gambit of young Ahri Karvonen, who feigned retreat before drawing the enemy fleet into Harjus’ depths. Using sound lures planted across the gas giant, the Karvonans tricked the heretics into pursuing them, only for the raider fleet, including their flagship Baleful Eye, to be devoured by mistwyrms.[1]
Although Harjus emerged victorious, its fleets were reduced to a quarter of their former strength, and the Grand Docks remain in need of extensive repairs. Nevertheless, House Karvonen has restored supply to the wider sector. [1]
Notable Figures
- Inquisitor Kai Varol – An Ordo Xenos agent investigating the true motives of the Chaos raiders. Survivors spoke of searching for a "Witch’s Blade" and etched xenos runes resembling Aeldari designs. Varol suspects links to the enigmatic Harlequins, who have visited Harjus periodically for centuries.[1]
- Ahri Karvonen – Young scion of House Karvonen, famed for the ruse that destroyed the Baleful Eye. Ahri’s leadership has cemented the family’s rule during and after the Noctis Aeterna.[1]
Factions
- House Karvonen – The hereditary rulers of Harjus, said to have sworn an accord with Saint Sejanus during the Macharian Crusade. Their reputation as defenders of the Imperium has only grown since their leadership of the resistance.[1]
- Administratum – Keen to restore Harjus’ supply lines, they exert enormous pressure on the Grand Docks to resume full production. Any delays in shipment invite sharp and immediate sanction.[1]
- Adeptus Mechanicus – Provide technical expertise to maintain the Grand Docks’ processing machinery, but have little permanent presence.[1]
