Hypno-Indoctrination is an Imperial psycho-encode process, that rapidly instills knowledge within a subject's psyche via the usage of modifiable memetic packages.[1]

History

The usage of this form of mental implantation and conditioning originates in the pre-Unification Terran civilizations, which used Hypno-Indoctrination to create legions of vassals. The process would then be used by the Imperium and during the Great Crusade it found limited use within the Administration, Remembrancer Order and the ranks of the Space Marine Legions. Hypno-Indoctrination was first used by the Legions on their Aspirants as the Sol System was being conquered by the Imperium's forces. The process swiftly accepted by the Legions and it became a benign method to increase their recruitment process, though it still proved inferior to hands-on training. There were drawbacks, however, as it was recorded that veteran Legionaries lacked respect for their brethren who underwent the Hypno-Indoctrination. It was also found, however, that repeated usage of the process, caused Aspirants to develop stunted tactical acumen and combat readiness, when compared to other Legionaries.[1]

The outbreak of the Horus Heresy, saw the Loyalist and Traitor Legions disregard these drawbacks however. As they rapidly increased their ranks with newly created Legionaries known as Inductii, Hypno-Indoctrination became favored to make up for the shortcuts and lack of training they received. In order to rapidly inject their minds with combat knowledge, the Inductii's memetic packages included weapons training, battle tactics and in many instances, subliminal obedience messages. The usage of Hypno-Inoctrination varied between the Legions, and even within their forces, as some chose not to make use of it. However after the Siege of Terra was ended, and the Traitors were defeated, it was discovered that those Inductii who had heavily used Hypno-Indoctrination, had become severely damaged by the process. Dissections of those slain on Terra, showed that the Inductii bore minor to severe neural degradation, persona dissociation, scarring of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex – resulting in decreased inhibition and increased aggression – and loss of pre-enhancement memories. The Loyalist Legions that made heavy use of the process, were noted for using indoctrination programs, to fill their Inductii's cognitive gaps with traits the Legions found agreeable.[1]

Overview

The psycho-conditioning of a Sapce Marine is often designed to instill certain traits of their Primarch at a subconscious level, as well as further reduce their already blunted fear response. After the Horus Heresy, adjustments were made to increase the intensity of Astartes hypno-training and incorporate additional aspects with the specific goal of resisting corruption and treachery. In the frenzy that would become the Scouring, these alternations in procedure resulted in about a 20% survival rate of neophytes during hypno. Astartes created after the Horus Heresy are conditioned to be less expressive and even more emotionally blunted. Their imaginations have been curtailed on all subjects outside of war. One of the most notable additions to their hypno-conditioning was a prominent hatred for Traitor Space Marines instilled into their psyches.[4]

Selected Chapter Serfs or other slaves serving Space Marines (or their Chaos counterparts) might undergo these hypnotic implantation programs and mental conditioning for specific tasks, such as piloting a Thunderhawk.[2]

Hypno-training is also used on various animals, such as the gene-wrought horses ridden by the Death Riders of Krieg.[3]
