History
Imperial Armour was launched in 1990 and announced in The Citadel Journal 32, described as a product range of "ultra-cool, ultra-detailed, ultra-specialist add-ons for Warhammer 40,000 tank kits."[1]
Over time, the range expanded to include tanks and vehicles from all of the major Warhammer 40,000 factions. Beginning in 2000, series of rule books were also published under the Imperial Armour name.[2] These provided background information and official rules for fielding Forge World miniatures in games of Warhammer 40,000.
Warwick Kinrade was at the helm of writing rules and contents for the Imperial Armour series since the very first models were released [1][2]. Beginning with Fall of Orpheus (2013), he was no longer credited as a writer.[3]
Publications
Softback
There are two original softback Imperial Armour books, followed by four Updates. They were produced by Fanatic for the Forge World staff in connection with the specialized miniature lines they produced based on pieces originally created in Epic scale. They were published from 2000 to 2006.
Hardback Numbered Volumes
The popularity of the softback editions and the Imperial Armour products encouraged the production of hardback books, to heighten the quality of the range and the background that accompanied it. Players were encouraged to use the models in 40k games, only if their opponent was made aware beforehand of their presence on the tabletop.[4]
There are thirteen numbered hardback Imperial Armour books that came out between 2003 and 2014
Second Editions
Six hardback Imperial Armour books have Second Editions, updating previously published material for the 6th and 7th Editions of Warhammer 40K.
Other Publications
Aeronautica focuses on Flyers, Masterclass features models showcase and provides useful modelling tips; Apocalypse volumes feature rules for the aforementioned game system.
8th Edition Indexes
In 2017, new rule indexes for the 8th Edition of the game were released for all factions
